China’s medical cosmetology market topped RMB 136.7 billion in 2017 and is on track to reach RMB 224.5 billion in 2018. By 2020, China’s demand for medical cosmetology products and services could easily exceed RMB 250 billion. This growth reflects the breakneck pace of China’s medical cosmetology market growth during the past three years. Average annual growth has hit 31.83% and a recent white paper from SoYoung predicts that China’s medical cosmetology market will continue grow at 25.67% each year for the next five years.
Young consumers represent the majority of China’s fast-growing medical cosmetology market. 64% of medical cosmetology customers are born after 1990 and 19% are born after 2000. At the same time, rising competition is driving down prices in the medical cosmetology market. SoYoung’s survey on online pricing of medical cosmetology offers shows that average prices have fallen 29% in the past three years.
A series of government policies have also encouraged investment in the medical cosmetology industry. They also permit doctors to practice in multiple clinics and hospitals, enabling them to enter the medical cosmetology business. The market growth is also attracting beauty salon operators who seek to add higher value services.
The flood of new entrants into China’s medical cosmetology market also creates the need for industry reform, standardization, and safety guidelines. China Beauty Expo (CBE) is partnering with the International Medicine of Anti-aging Aesthetics Congress (IMAAC) to invite leading international experts from across Asia, Europe, and the US to organize a series of summits on medical cosmetology in China.
